Summary of the Test Advertisements
There you have it. Remember, these are actual advertisements. They were found in either the November or December 1998 issues of Cosmopolitan magazine. Did you find any themes in these images?

In the November issue, the magazine ran a feature story on their new Editor-in-Chief, Kate White (shown at left). Ms. White is quoted saying, "I'm thrilled to be here, heading up the most informative, the most exciting, and of course, the sexiest women's magazine on the planet."

Cosmopolitan considers themselves as one of the nation's key information sources for women (and probably for many men as well). We believe that many of the readers are teen or collage-aged. What kind of message is Cosmopolitan sending to these impressionable young women?

Look back through your answers. Did you find any messages in the advertisements to suggest lively, happy, cute, cool, sexy, empowerment, appealing or intrigue? The tobacco industry works very hard to send these messages along with their product advertising.

Due to the amount of tobacco advertising featured in Cosmopolitan, we cancelled our subscription (see letter). We ask you do the same.

Send a message to Cosmopolitan and other media sources. Vote with your dollars. Tell publishers we want a better world. We want a world where our children are not targeted and preyed upon by the tobacco industry. We prefer a world characterized by the concepts in the image below.
